Bayne’s Third-Place Finish Leads 3 Roush Fenway Fords in Top 10 at Daytona
Daytona Beach, Fla. (July 2, 2016) – Trevor Bayne made a hard charge on the outside lane late in Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400 Sprint Cup race to power his way to an impressive third-place finish; leading three Roush Fenway Fords in the top eight at Daytona International Speedway. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. joined Bayne inside the field’s top-five with a fifth-place finish and Greg Biffle – who started on the pole and overcame getting caught up in a mid-race accident – finished eighth.
“I am really proud of this Roush Fenway team,” said Bayne. “We had a pole this weekend, three cars in the top-10, two in the top-five. That last run, starting 12th and being on the top and getting a run in that lane and having a lot of help from the No. 3 we were able to work the top and get a P3.”
“It was wild out there,” added Stenhouse. “(Bowyer) was pushing me the whole last lap. I wasn’t sure that we would be able to be pushed all the way through the corners but we were able to hold it in a straight line as best we could and get a top-five out of it.
“The Roush Fenway guys worked really hard,” continued Stenhouse. “And Jack (Roush) has put a lot of confidence in everyone to get our cars better each week. We have really improved on the speedways.”
Putting an exclamation point on what was a strong weekend for the team, the race marked the first time all three Roush Fenway Fords have finished inside the top 10 since 2014. Biffle started the weekend with Roush Fenway’s fifth Daytona pole and led two laps during the race, before getting caught up 22-car accident midway through the race.
“It was a rough night after we got in that wreck,” said Biffle. “We got shuffled out of line and that will happen with speedway racing. We were working our way back up and running with the No. 4 car and a few of those guys and somebody got turned right in the middle. We got pretty severe damage and were able to come back and finish eighth. We had a pretty fast car tonight. We have some work to do still but I am so proud of my guys. This Ford EcoBoost Fusion ran really well.”
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returns to action next weekend at Kentucky Speedway.
