Newman and No. 6 Team Look To Finish Season Strong

CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 17, 2019) – Ryan Newman was only 0.007 seconds away from Victory Lane last weekend at Talladega Superspeedway.

With a three-lap shootout to the finish, Newman lined up fifth on the inside line for the restart. After a four-car group went single-file coming to the white flag, Newman took the lead and led coming out of four and through the tri-oval, before Ryan Blaney went to his inside and won only by inches.

“I definitely wanted to get the Wyndham Rewards Ford into Victory Lane,” Newman told SiriusXM’s Claire B. Lang. “I’m just really proud of our team, continuing to show progression and making moves forwards. It’s our best finish of the year, just obviously disappointed that we didn’t win.”

Newman credits longtime crew chief Jimmy Fennig with both of Roush Fenway’s great runs in Alabama on Sunday.

“Jimmy (Fennig) does a great job with our speedway program,” Newman said. “It’s only four races a year, but Jimmy puts a lot of heart, soul, effort, elbow grease and all of things it takes to make our cars go fast. It was nice to see our cars be really competitive and run up front.”

This weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series heads to the Midwest for 400 miles of racing at Kansas Speedway. Newman has one win, three top-five’s and seven top-10 finishes at the mile and a half track. This weekend, he says it’s all about moving forward and finishing strong in the points.

“I look forward to Kansas,” Newman explained. “We’ve learned a lot on these cookie cutter mile and a half’s. It hasn’t been our strength but I feel like if you look back to Vegas – we had a good car, run and team effort. I think that if we can just continue to grow, we’ll be good.”

Newman and the No. 6 team return to the track Sunday, October 20th at Kansas Speedway at 2:30 p.m. on NBC.
