Fennig, Roush Fenway focused on moving forward as 2021 season approaches
CONCORD, N.C. (Jan. 29, 2021) – With just over two weeks until the green flag drops on the Daytona 500, and Roush Fenway Racing begins its 34th year in the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series, there is one word that dominates conversation at the team offices: forward.
“The only thing we can do is move forward,” said Jimmy Fennig, executive vice president in charge of competition. “Everyone in our organization is behind us to move forward.”
Fennig started with the organization in 1997 and helped guide the team through some of its most successful runs. Late last year, the team promoted Fennig to oversee all aspects of competition for racing operations. The move marks a big change for the organization, but one that he is ready to face head on.
“My job is to make sure that everyone here is working together and toward one common goal,” Fennig explained. “Everyone here has great ideas, so we want to pull all of that together and work toward one common goal.”
Earlier this month, the team announced a partnership with Kohler Generators, which will make its debut on the No. 6 Ford in a few weeks. Last month, Castrol and Guaranteed Rate announced their extended partnership with the team for the season. While the competition team focuses on moving forward in the shop, good news on the business development side has also inspired confidence.
“It’s always good news to hear,” Fennig said. “When the guys know that we’re in a great spot for both cars for the year, it’s a very comforting thing. That’s another example of team unity. All of us are striving for the best.”
When it comes to superspeedway racing, the organization is no stranger to success. Fennig is credited for playing a large role in advancing that department, but as Daytona quickly approaches he says it has always been a team effort.
“It’s not just me,” Fennig said “It’s everyone around our organization, including Doug Yates. It’s how Ryan [Newman] and Chris [Buescher] use the draft. It’s about the whole organization putting all of their effort into the program. And like I said, going forward.”
Buescher and Newman return to the track for the 63rd Annual Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 14 at 2:30 p.m. EST on FOX.
