Mid-Race Incident Relegates Reed to 32nd-Place Finish
JOLIET, Ill. (September 17, 2016) – Roush Fenway Racing driver Ryan Reed and the No. 16 Lilly Diabetes/American Diabetes Association team finished 32nd on Saturday at Chicagoland Speedway in the last regular season race before the Chase for the 2016 NASCAR XFINITY Series Championship. Reed’s race was cut short on Lap 101 when contact with the No. 42 sent Reed into the wall. The damage was too severe to repair.
“It’s a frustrating result,” said Reed. “We were battling all race and it’s a shame to have your day end the way that it did but we’ll just have to move on. I’m excited to start The Chase next week in Kentucky.”
Reed led the Roush Fenway qualifying effort Saturday morning, advancing to the second round of NXS qualifying and placing 14th. He took the green flag and immediately began moving forward, advancing to the 11th position before the Lap 25 competition caution.
The No. 16 Lilly Diabetes Mustang began to free up during the subsequent green flag run, but Reed would battle to maintain a top-12 position. The green flag run continued before he brought out a caution, spinning while attempting to enter pit road on lap 82.
Restarting in the tenth position on Lap 88, Reed gained a spot on the restart before another quick caution came out for fluid in turn 3. He would restart ninth on Lap 95, but was shuffled back on the restart to 11th .
On Lap 101, Reed and the No. 42 car made contact which sent the Lilly Diabetes Mustang into the wall. The massive damage to the right side was too much to repair, ending Reed’s race early.
After today’s race, Reed remains 10th in the NASCAR XFINITY Series championship standings and has locked in to compete in the NASCAR XFINITY Series Chase.
Reed and the rest of the NASCAR XFINITY Series will be back on track on Saturday, September 24th at Kentucky Speedway.
