Bayne Comes Home 17th in Vegas
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (March 6, 2016) – Trevor Bayne, driver of the No. 6 AdvoCare Ford Fusion, improved 11 positions throughout the course of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon to earn a 17th-place finish.
“We made a lot of gains this weekend,” said Bayne after the race. “We had some good speed and (crew chief) Matt (Puccia) made some good adjustments during the race. Although we hope to be better than 17th there are a lot of positives to take out of today and I’m ready to keep taking the steps in the right direction next week in Phoenix with this AdvoCare Ford.”
Bayne began the 267-Lap race from the 28th position in a race that saw Mother Nature play a key role with strong winds persisting throughout the day. From the drop of the green flag, Bayne reported to crew chief Matt Puccia that the AdvoCare Ford was tight through the center and exit of the corners. Puccia then utilized a Lap 30 competition caution to bring Bayne to pit road for four tires and a chassis adjustment.
The Knoxville, Tenn. native returned to the track following the pit stop in 20th and continued to battle for position in the top 20 during the green-flag run that followed. However, as the green-flag run progressed, the tight handling condition through the center of the corner remained. This handling condition ultimately cost Bayne a lap to the race leaders following the second round of green-flag pit stops on Lap 150.
An opportune caution on Lap 178 allowed the Roush Fenway Racing driver to get the “Free Pass” back onto the lead lap. Once back on the lead lap Bayne began to work his way forward, racing his way up to the 14th position before narrowly avoiding a multi-car incident on Lap 224. Bayne took the ensuing restart from 15th and continued to battle for position in the top 15 throughout much of the green-flag run that followed.
In the closing stages, Bayne battled with Jamie McMurray before crossing the finish line for the final time in the 17th position.
Next up for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday, March 13.
