Bayne Comes Home 20th in 2016 Season Finale at Homestead
HOMESTEAD, Fla. (Nov. 20, 2016) – Trevor Bayne, driver of the No. 6 AdvoCare Ford Fusion, recorded a 20th-place finish in the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday evening.
“That wasn’t the result we were looking for but I’m proud of my team tonight,” said Bayne after the race. “We never gave up and fought hard tonight. I just want to thank everyone who worked on this AdvoCare team all season long. This is a great group of guys and I’m really looking forward to working with them again next season when we get to Daytona.”
Bayne started the final event of the season from the 20th position after advancing to the second round of qualifying on Friday night. From the drop of the green flag, Bayne reported to crew chief Matt Puccia that the AdvoCare Ford was struggling to find grip rolling through the corners. This handling condition shuffled Bayne back to 24th before the first round of green-flag pit stops on Lap 70.
The Knoxville, Tenn. native returned to the track in 24th following the stop but continued to struggle to find grip throughout much of the middle portion of the event. Despite the handling issues, Bayne never gave up and continued to fight for position in the top 25.
In a race that became a battle of attrition, Bayne narrowly avoided two-consecutive incidents on back-to-back restarts that ultimately gave crew chief Puccia one last chance to bring the AdvoCare Ford to pit road for adjustments. Following the final stop of the evening Bayne took the green for NASCAR’s version of overtime from 22nd.
In the end, Bayne would make a three-wide move on the final lap to take the final checkered flag of 2016 in the 20th position.
