Bayne Finishes 23rd In First Road Course Race Of The Season
SONOMA, Calif. (June 28, 2015) – Trevor Bayne, driver of the No. 6 AdvoCare Ford Fusion, rallied back from a lap down to earn a 23rd-place finish in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) event at Sonoma Raceway on Sunday afternoon.
“I really learned a lot throughout the course of the race,” said Bayne after the race. “For this being my first time here, I’m very happy about keeping all four tires on the track throughout the day and bringing this AdvoCare Ford home in one piece. I want to thank all of my guys for their hard work today and we’ll definitely take this moving on to Daytona next weekend.”
Bayne took the green flag from the 31st position and was able to maintain his track position throughout much of the early portion of the race, ultimately moving his way up to 27th prior to the first caution coming out on Lap 21. The driver of the AdvoCare Ford would continue to climb forward when the race went back to green, maneuvering up to the 24th position as various pit road strategies began to play out among the race leaders.
The Knoxville, Tenn. native would race his way inside the top 20 before crew chief Bob Osborne called the Roush Fenway Ford to pit road for the first round of green flag pit stops on Lap 67.
An untimely caution six laps later trapped Bayne one lap down to the race leaders in the 30th position. Pitting for fresh tires during the caution period, Bayne returned to the track in the 33rd position and wasted little time racing his way up to 28th and into the free pass position. Fending off all challengers, Bayne would receive the free pass back onto the lead lap following a Lap 98 caution.
Taking the ensuing Lap 103 restart from the 28th position, Bayne would improve five positions in the closing stages and take the checkered flag in the 23rd position.
Next up for the NSCS is Daytona International Speedway on Sunday, July 5.
