Newman looks to continue No. 6 team momentum in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (April 12, 2019) – Ryan Newman and the No. 6 team recorded their best finish of the season this past weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway. After rolling off the grid in 11th, the team overcame both a pit road penalty and an on-track incident to take the checkered flag ninth.

“It was a good day for us collectively,” Newman told SiriusXM’s Claire B. Lang. “We came back from 15th after staying out on the last caution, gained a little bit of track position and restarted fifth. But the bottom line didn’t go and we ended up falling back to ninth. Our finish wasn’t indicative of how well we were running because we were definitely better than that. But it’s our first top-10 of the season so we’ll take it.”

Although Newman had his best weekend of the season, he was still unhappy with the result. The driver explains that he’s always unhappy with penalties and challenges himself to learn more with each passing weekend.

“I’m disappointed when we get some kind of penalty or if we have to start in the back,” Newman explained. “But in the end I see it as a challenge or an opportunity to try and move forward. I just try and work my way forward.”

This weekend the team takes on Richmond Raceway, one of Newman’s best and favorite tracks. With one win, one pole, seven top-five finishes and 18 top-10s at the Virginia track, the driver looks to have more success with the No. 6 team this go around.

“Richmond is such a great racetrack,” Newman said. “To me, it’s one of the best short tracks we go to, if not the best for racing and side by side action. It’s fun when you get to go to a place like Richmond and feel like you’re making a bigger impact on the effort and the results of your weekend by working those controls in the racecar.”

When it comes to the No. 6 team progress, Newman agrees that they’re on an upswing.

“I feel like we’ve definitely advanced,” Newman said. “I think our team is growing and has a lot more ability when it comes to results. So I think that Richmond hopefully is a lot of fun and we’ll have another good finish next week.”

Newman returns to the track this Saturday April 13th at Richmond Raceway at 7:30 p.m. ET on FOX.
