Reed Finishes 11th at Chicagoland
JOLIET, Ill. (September 19, 2015) – Roush Fenway Racing driver Ryan Reed and the No. 16 Lilly Diabetes American Diabetes Association team finished 11th on Saturday at Chicagoland Speedway to record the team’s 14th top-15 finish of the season.
“We continue to improve every week and this team is definitely getting stronger,” said Reed. “We are getting closer to those top-10 finishes that we need and will continue to work until we get there.
We brought a great car to Chicagoland and made adjustments all night to make it better. We learned some things that will definitely translate in the coming weeks and I’m excited to see what we can do.”
Reed started the 200-lap event from the 10th position on Saturday afternoon and settled into the 13th position by Lap 10. He reported to the team that the car was tight and it was really hard to see in Turns 3 and 4 because of the sun.
The team had its first chance to make adjustments under caution on Lap 21. Reed pitted from the 15th position on Lap 23 for a wedge adjustment,four tires and fuel. He had previously reported that the car ran good on the bottom and he felt like it was freeing up as the sun went down.
He restarted 16th on Lap 26 and had made his way up to 12th by Lap 32. He reported to crew chief Chad Norris that the car was loose and continuing to go in that direction. He held on until Lap 74 when the team made its only green-flag pit stop of the day. Norris called for four tires, fuel and another wedge adjustment to help the car’s front entry into the turns.
Reed continued to report that the car was free on Lap 82 while running 14th. When the next caution was displayed five laps later, Reed took the opportunity to get back on the lead lap by taking the wave around. He restarted 14th on Lap 92.
The third caution of the night was displayed on Lap 102. Reed reported that he car was good and had tightened up a little. He asked for some help on his entrance and exit to the turns. The team pitted on Lap 103 under the caution period for four tires, fuel and a slight wedge adjustment. The team gained Reed two spots on pit road, leaving him to restart in the 12th position on Lap 108.
Soon after the restart, Reed cracked the top-10. By Lap 126, he reported that the track was starting to tighten up and held on to the 12th position.
The caution was displayed again on Lap 131 at which time Reed asked for some help with the car’s turning ability. The team brought Reed down pit road for an air pressure adjustment, four tires and fuel. After Reed left the pits, Norris told Reed that the team also repaired some fender damage, which may have aggravated the tight condition he had previously reported.
The field restarted on Lap 136 and Reed radioed to the team in the next laps that the car was extremely loose. They were able to correct the loose condition on the following caution, which came on Lap 141. The team pitted for fuel and a track bar adjustment, putting Reed 17th for the restart on lap 147.
In the last 50 laps of the event, Reed reported that the car’s handling was tight, but he continued to march his way up through the field. In the last 15 laps of the race, Reed’s position improved from 14th to 11th, where he would finish the race.
Reed remains 10th in the NASCAR XFINITY Series championship standings after his top-15 at Chicagoland. Reed and the rest of the NASCAR XFINITY Series will return to the track on Saturday, September 26th at Kentucky Speedway.
