Roush Fenway Makes It “Gnarly” in Classic SunnyD Commercial Spoof
CONCORD, N.C. (May 10, 2016) – Roush Fenway Racing has added a NASCAR twist to a 90’s commercial classic, remaking the iconic ‘purple stuff’ SunnyD TV commercial with a unique NASCAR flavor. The remake stars NASCAR champions Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Chris Buescher, along with FOX NASCAR personalities Andrew Doud and Kaitlyn Vincie. Vincie plays the part of ‘Misses V’ – an unforgettably cheerful lady with a great smile and seemingly endless supply of Sunny D – while Doud delivers the unforgettable classic line “Mega gnarly Misses V.”
“We thought it would be a fun way to generate some exposure for SunnyD, who will be the primary on our No. 17 Ford Fusion this week in Dover,” said Stenhouse. “Everyone is familiar with the classic “purple stuff” commercials, so when SunnyD signed to partner with us for five races this season it was pretty much a no-brainer that we were going to have some fun with it.
“We have to thank Kaitlyn and Andrew, who were great sports and it was a lot of fun remaking the spot that so many people grew up watching.”
“When we found out that Ricky and the crew wanted to shoot a riff on the classic SunnyD “Purple Stuff” advertising campaign, we could not have been more excited to participate,” said Michael Burton, Chief Marketing Officer, Sunny Delight Beverages Company. “Ricky, Chris, Andrew and Kaitlyn all did an amazing job in bringing the old ad back to life. It will be fun to see what these guys want to do next.”
The video, which was shot and edited by local agency Theory Communication & Design, will be shared socially across the Roush Fenway and SunnyD social channels this week. SunnyD will serve as the primary partner on Stenhouse’s car this weekend at Dover International Speedway and at Sprint Cup races later in the season in Pocono, Indianapolis and Charlotte. Stenhouse will also run the NASCAR XFINITY Series race in November at Phoenix, carrying the bright colors of SunnyD.
“It’s really just a fun brand to promote,” added Stenhouse. “We all grew up drinking it and who really wants ‘purple stuff’ when you can have some SunnyD?”
