Wallace In Contention To Win At Iowa Speedway, Finishes Sixth

NEWTON, Iowa (May 17, 2015) – Bubba Wallace was in contention to win late in Sunday’s NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Iowa Speedway. The Rookie of the Year contender ran in the top-10 all day, ultimately pushing his Roush Fenway Racing teammate Chris Buescher to the lead on the final restart of the event. Wallace would cross the line in sixth in his No. 6 Ford EcoBoost Mustang.

“We were solid all day,” said Wallace. “I thought we would finish third, but the caution came out. We are just one or two adjustments from where we need to be.”

Qualifying on Saturday evening netted Wallace an eighth-place starting spot for the Sunday afternoon race. From the start of the race, Wallace began working his way forward, gaining two positions by the completion of Lap 1. When the caution flag waved on Lap 9, Wallace radioed to the team that the track was slick and his Mustang was too free.

Wallace continued to race inside the top-10, before visiting pit road under the competition caution on Lap 60. Crew chief Chad Norris called for four tires, fuel and a track bar adjustment to help his driver.

After restarting 12^th, Wallace worked his way back into the top-10 within two laps of the Lap 66 restart. Ten laps into the run, Wallace informed the team that his Mustang had fired off too free. However, just a few laps later he radioed to the team that the handling had started to come back around.

A long green flag run after a Lap 88 restart left Wallace with a Mustang that was again too free. Wallace hit pit road under caution on Lap 144 for four tires, fuel and another track bar adjustment.

When the 21-year-old driver returned to the track, he was instructed to save fuel, as the team was just a couple laps shy. Wallace restarted seventh, and used the last 100 laps of the race to methodically work his way forward.

The caution flag waved as the field came to take the white flag, which promoted Norris to bring his driver down pit road for right side tires under the caution. Wallace lined up fifth for the restart, pushing his Roush Fenway teammate to the lead. Wallace would cross the line in sixth, his third top-10 of the 2015 season.

With the result, Wallace remains fourth in the NASCAR XFINITY Series point standings, six points out of third. The series returns to action on Saturday at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
